Ingredients
This quick dessert is made with simple ingredients that are easy to keep on hand just in case you get the craving for an irresistible fruit dessert.
- 1 - 29 ounce canned peaches in heavy syrup - May substitute canned peach slices in light syrup or fruit juice. But if you do, drain a cup of liquid from the can. The goal is to have enough moisture so that the peaches are syrupy, and not too watery when baked.
- 1 box of cake mix - We use a box of yellow cake mix. May substitute white cake mix.
- 1 cup salted butter - We use two sticks, but 1 stick of butter will work, too.
Equipment
- baking dish - 9 x 13 baking dish, casserole dish, or disposable roasting pan.
Make it fancy with a pretty baking dish. Our favorite one to use is this Emile Henry baking dish, which we have in blue.
For casual potlucks, summer cook outs and picnics, we use a disposable roasting pan. That way we can just leave it or throw the pan away for easy cleanup. - can opener
- knife - For cutting the butter.
- airtight container or aluminum foil - for storage purposes.
- nonstick cooking spray (optional) - This can be used to spray the bottom of the baking dish, but we have found it to be an unnecessary step.

Recipe FAQ's
It is a delicious baked fruit dessert made from 3 ingredients: Sliced canned fruit, cake mix, and topped with butter. It is similar to a cobbler, except that it uses cake mix instead of a biscuit or pastry topping that a cobbler uses.
You DO NOT STIR a dump cake. First layer is the fruit. Second layer is the cake mix. Third layer is butter on top. A lot of butter. The butter will soak into the cake layer underneath it and create a delicious, browned crust on top of the fruit when baked.
Dump cake is done when the fruit is bubbly on the edges and the cake is baked through.
Variations
Make peach and pineapple dump cake by adding crushed pineapple in with the peaches. Or try swapping out the sliced peaches for a can of cherry pie filling and a can of crushed pineapple. Twice the fruit and oh so delicious!

Penny
This is so easy to make & it tastes fantastic! I made it using the peaches the first time & since then I have also made it using 2 cans of Blueberry Pie Filling with a white cake mix. This also tasted spectacular & our dinner guest just raved about it. No one will ever guess just how easy it is to make because it actually tastes as though you were in the kitchen cooking for hours! Never again will I have to panic whenever unexpected guests show up on our doorstep!
Seanna
That's so awesome to hear, Penny! Blueberry sounds delicious.
Yvonne E Siber
It sounds delicious. I was wondering if frozen fruits could be used instead of canned. I don't have canned fruits but I do have frozen, of course.
Seanna
Hi Yvonne,
Thank you! Sure, though I haven't tested this recipe with frozen fruit. You'd need to sweeten up the frozen fruit first. Try adding 1/4 cup of granulated sugar to the frozen fruit and heat it up in a pan on the stovetop until its bubbly, syrupy, and sweet like canned fruit. If it's not sweet enough, add more sugar. Then follow the recipe steps to complete the Dump Cake. Let me know how it turns out!
Judy Given
Can I use peach pie filling instead of canned peaches?
Seanna Borrows
Absolutely! It'll turn out perfectly. I'll be sure to add that note in the recipe. Thanks so much for your question. 😊
