What Makes Swedish Meatballs Different?
Swedish meatballs are different from Italian meatballs because they are seasoned with warm spices like nutmeg or allspice and served in a rich, creamy gravy instead of tomato sauce. They are typically smaller, more tender, and more delicately seasoned.
Traditionally, Swedish meatballs are served with buttered egg noodles or mashed potatoes, and often with lingonberry jam on the side for a sweet contrast to the savory sauce.
Why This Recipe Works
- Everything cooks in one pot. The meatballs, creamy gravy, and egg noodles simmer together in the same pan, which means fewer dishes and deeper flavor.
- Browning the meatballs builds flavor. Searing the meatballs first creates delicious browned bits in the pan that become the base for the Swedish meatball gravy.
- A simple roux creates a silky sauce. Butter and flour form a quick roux that thickens the beef broth and cream into a smooth, savory gravy.
- Egg noodles cook right in the sauce. The noodles absorb flavor from the gravy while they cook, making this dish extra comforting and satisfying.
- Ready in about 30 minutes. The steps stay simple so you can get a cozy homemade dinner on the table quickly.
- Gentle cooking keeps the meatballs tender. Simmering them in the sauce instead of overcooking helps maintain a soft, flavorful texture.
Food is love. Cooking is community.

Here's What You Need

Meatball Ingredients
- Ground beef - Lean ground beef or ground sirloin works best for tender, flavorful meatballs.
- Breadcrumbs - Help bind the meatballs and keep them soft and tender. Crushed crackers or cornflakes can be used as a substitute.
- Eggs - Act as the binder that holds the meatball mixture together.
If you're short on time, you can substitute store-bought frozen meatballs and simply make the creamy Swedish meatball gravy and noodles.

Sauce and Pasta Ingredients
- All-purpose flour - Combined with butter to create a roux that thickens the creamy gravy. Cornstarch can also be used.
- Heavy cream - Adds richness and creates the classic creamy Swedish meatball sauce.
- Parmesan cheese (optional) - Not traditional in Swedish meatballs, but it adds extra savory flavor.
- Egg noodles - Cook directly in the gravy and absorb all the rich flavor from the sauce.
See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reader Review: Pat says, "Used bought frozen meatballs, gravy was tasty and quick, served over egg noodles. Nice quick meal!"
Substitutions & Add-Ins
- Ground turkey or bison - A leaner alternative to ground beef.
- Cornflakes or crackers instead of breadcrumbs - Work well as a binder in the meatball mixture.
- Sour cream instead of heavy cream - Creates a slightly tangier sauce.
Variations
Here are a few ideas to switch up your classic Swedish Meatball recipe:
- Classic version: Keep the recipe exactly as written for a traditional creamy gravy.
- Mushroom version: Add sautéed mushrooms to the sauce for deeper flavor.
- Dijon version: Stir a tablespoon of Dijon mustard into the sauce for a subtle tang.
- Party appetizer: Make smaller meatballs and serve them with the gravy as an appetizer.
- Spicy Kick. Stir in a teaspoon of red pepper flakes or some Homemade Italian Seasoning or Dry Rub for a spicy twist.
- Cheesy Center. Add a small piece of cheese to the center of each meatball before cooking for a cheesy surprise.

How to Make Easy One Pot Swedish Meatballs
To make one-pot Swedish meatballs, brown the meatballs first, then create a creamy gravy with butter, flour, broth, and cream. Add uncooked egg noodles directly to the sauce and simmer until tender so the noodles absorb flavor and thicken the dish.
First Make The Meatballs

Step 1. Mix the Meatball Ingredients. Place the ground beef, breadcrumbs, and eggs in a large bowl. Gently mix until evenly combined.
Avoid overmixing, which can make the meatballs tough.

Step 2. Form Balls. Use a spoon or small cookie scoop to portion the mixture into about 18 meatballs. Roll gently to create evenly sized balls.

Step 3. Brown the Meatballs. Heat a large skillet with oil over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on both sides.
Transfer to a plate and set aside.
Make The Sauce
Step 4. Make the Roux. Add butter to the same pan and melt over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for about 2-3 minutes while stirring.
This removes the raw flour taste and forms the base for the gravy.
Step 5. Add Broth. Slowly whisk in the beef broth while stirring the roux. Scrape the bottom of the pan to lift the flavorful browned bits.
These drippings create a rich base for the gravy.
See our Simple Pan Gravy for more info on making pan gravy.

Step 6. Stir in the Cream. Add the heavy cream and a pinch of salt. Stir until the sauce becomes smooth and creamy.
Add Meatballs and Pasta
Step 7. Cook the Meatballs and Noodles. Return the meatballs to the pan and add the uncooked egg noodles. Nestle the noodles into the sauce.
Cover and simmer for about 8 minutes, or until the noodles are tender.

Finish the Dish
Step 8. Add Parmesan and Parsley. Stir in Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
Serve hot with plenty of creamy gravy.

Expert Tips
- Don't overmix the meat mixture. Overworking the meat can make the meatballs dense instead of tender.
- Brown the meatballs well. This step creates flavorful browned bits in the pan that enrich the gravy.
- Simmer, Don't Boil. Simmering them in the sauce will keep them tender. Avoid boiling, as this can make them tough.
- Serve Hot. Swedish meatballs are best served hot, so enjoy them immediately after cooking.
Troubleshooting
Sauce too thick? If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a small splash of beef broth or cream until it reaches your desired consistency.
Sauce too thin? If the sauce seems too thin, let it simmer uncovered for a few minutes so it can reduce and thicken.
Meatballs falling apart? If the meatballs fall apart while cooking, make sure the egg is fully mixed into the meat mixture so it can properly bind the ingredients together.
What To Serve With Swedish Meatballs
This dish is delicious served with egg noodles, but it's also wonderful over Creamy Make-Ahead Mashed Potatoes or alongside Cheesy Hashbrown Casserole.
Traditionally, Swedish meatballs are served with lingonberry jam, which adds a sweet contrast to the rich gravy.
Storage & Make-Ahead Tips
Make-Ahead: Prepare the meatballs and sauce up to one day in advance.
Refrigerate: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
Freeze: Freeze the meatballs and gravy for up to 3 months.
Reheat: Warm gently on the stovetop, adding broth or cream if the sauce thickens.
